Atimaono: From the land of the Teva to the 27-hole golf course

In ancient times, Papara and its wide coastal plain was the agricultural granary of Tahiti and contributed to the power of the ruling family, the Teva of the Mountain. In the 19th century, the great land of Atimaono was transformed into a large agricultural plantation. After more than a century of a history with varied fortunes, the international golf course of Tahiti was established there.

Land is scarce in Tahiti. In past centuries, before the Encounter, those who owned the cultivated areas were more powerful: they avoided famines, could feed a larger population, muster more warriors, and build larger marae (temples).
